Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) Regatta – Saratoga Springs, NY

The 72nd Annual Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Regatta, will be held at Fish Creek, in Saratoga Springs, NY on on May 26th and 27th. Founded in 1935, the Scholastic Rowing Association has maintained a wonderful tradition of providing the highest level of high school racing competition.

The following is information about the SRAA trip: cost, transportation, hotel, food, and incidental information. PLEASE NOTE that SRAA forms must returned by Monday, May 22, 2006.

DEPARTURE AND RETURN TIMES:
The team will leave the parking lot of Langley High School at 7:00 a.m., Thursday, May 25th via chaperone cars. The cars will be traveling directly to the lake where the team will rig the boats, conduct a short practice, and have dinner. PLEASE ARRIVE AT THE SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 6:50 a.m.

The races will begin early Friday morning with preliminary heats; races continue Saturday with semi-finals and finals. The chaperones will be the team’s transportation to and from the regatta site each day.

STANDARDS OF LEARNING (SOL) TESTING:
SOLs are scheduled for the week of 22 May. If this trip causes your son/daughter to miss an SOL test, your son/daughter needs to make prior arrangements with the classroom teacher to take the test during another period when the teacher is giving the test. There will be make-up sessions scheduled during the week of May 31st for each subject area.

LUGGAGE:
Students will bring their luggage to the crew shed for tagging by 6:50 a.m. on Thursday, May 25th before boarding the bus/chaperone cars for a 7:00 a.m. departure. Space will be tight - only one bag per rower plus their backpack.
The rowers must be on time since the trip to New York will take 8 hours (including a stop for lunch).


TRANSPORTATION:
Transportation will be by personal vehicles.

FOOD:
Rowers should bring snacks for the trip to New York and money for a lunch stop on the way; they may also want to have some snacks for their hotel room.
We will eat breakfast and dinner at local restaurants and lunch will be purchased and brought to the Regatta. Rowers must bring spending money for all meals and parent chaperones will accompany the rowers. If we are successful in our competition, we will be leaving the regatta in the afternoon on Saturday and we will stop for dinner on the way home.
Rowers may want to bring extra spending money in case they want to buy snacks or souvenirs at the regatta site. All rowers should bring a water bottle to reuse; this reduces both trash and costs.

COST:
The cost for the trip to New York is $150. The cost covers two nights lodging, transportation to and from the hotel site and the river, boat transport, tent and regatta seat fees.
Rowers should bring money to cover all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) for 3 days = $110.00

T-SHIRTS: "Official SRAA championship shirt" will be available at the regatta for $20. The "National Champion" shirt will be available for all gold medal winners to purchase.

The rowers will be assigned four to a room by "boat seats" (two double beds per room), so some rowers might like to bring sleeping bags. The students will not be able to make phone calls home from their rooms, but pay phones are available in the lobby.

PERMISSION FORMS/PAYMENT:
The SRAA permission forms AND payment (check made out to LCBC) must be filled out and returned by Monday, May 22, 2006. All forms and checks are to be placed in the LCBC mailbox in the school activities office.

Permission forms to sign and return include:
- Parent Authorization and Acknowledgement of Risk for Field Trips – all students
- Field Trip Driver’s License and Vehicle Insurance Information – all chaperones and parent drivers.
- Field Trip Luggage Search Consent - all students
- Medication Authorization – only for students who require medication that must be taken during this trip
- Acknowledgment of Langley Crew Out of Town Regatta Rules – all students
- SRAA - Release of Liability - all students
- Pre-Arranged Absence Form – all students

DEADLINE FOR ALL SRAA FORMS: Monday, May 22, 2006, 3:00 PM.

UNISUITS:
It is a regatta regulation that all rowers in the boat be dressed identically. Please do not forget your Unisuit. No crew will be allowed to row in violation of this rule.

CHAPERONES:
We are required by the school to have adequate adult supervision on these trips. The chaperones’ duties are to oversee the activities at the hotel and at the regatta site (when not in direct control of the coach). Please ask your rower to respect the authority of the volunteer parent chaperones—they are there for your rower’s safety. The Out of Town Regatta Rules will be strictly enforced. All parents driving will need to fill out a Field Trip Driver’s License and Vehicle Insurance Information form in case they are needed to transport a rower. Drivers will be reimbursed for gas.

LANGLEY REGATTA SITE:
We will be setting up our team tent as headquarters along the lake. It will be our place to congregate and cheer as the Langley boats race by. A plastic tarp will be put on the ground, but parents are encouraged to bring additional tarps, picnic blankets, lawn chairs, and beach towels.
