Langley Crew - Volunteering Bus Chaperone

Bus Chaperone

One of the most popular features of Langley Crew is the bus service we offer to and from the practice venue at the Occoquan Reservoir. However, we are not permitted by FCPS to offer this service unless a parent rides each of our buses as a chaperone. This is a relatively light duty, so feel free to bring a book, but if you can assist with any onshore organization, it will be appreciated. You can also bring younger children with you, or ride along on the launches with a coach.

Essentially, you ride the bus to the Occoquan, spend the practice time relaxing or enjoying the park, and then return on the bus after practice. Once you arrive back at Langley you will stay until all the students have been picked up.

Chaperones are needed Monday-Friday afternoon (3:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.) during the Spring season.

Bus Chaperone Duties

Chaperoning is one of the easiest volunteer roles. As the chaperone, you will:

  1. Arrive at the school by 3:00 pm
  2. Ensure the bus drivers have the correct directions – including express lanes – and drop-off location
  3. Ensure the buses leave by 3:30 pm
  4. Make sure the students behave properly – staying in their seats and not getting too rowdy
  5. Post on the Parents’ GroupMe chat when the buses leave the park
  6. Post again when the buses reach 495
  7. As the bus approaches the school, remind the students to check for belongings and to gather their trash
  8. Before students leave the bus, the chaperone and captain will do a check of the bus for belongings in the overhead bin and loose trash
  9. Notify the driver to open the door and allow the kids to depart
  10. Do a final check for lost items or trash
  11. Wait at the school for all students to be picked up
