Off-Season Rowing Opportunities

There are several off-season programs where students can learn new rowing skills, develop as a competitive rower/coxswain, or compete in national and international regattas. Below is a list of recommended rowing programs and camps. Please see your coach about which program might be the best fit for you, based on your goals for your personal development. Several of the programs are in high demand and should be reserved as soon as possible, as space is limited.

Local & Regional Rowing Programs

Resilient Rowing Club
Resilient Rowing Club practices at Sandy Run during the summer months. Through their competitive and developmental rowing programs, athletes can work with coaches who have 70+ years combined experience preparing rowers for success at the state, national, United States Junior National Team, and collegiate levels. RRC is dedicated to improving the DMV rowing community, but most importantly to giving every rower and coxswain in the Resilient Rowing family the tools necessary to be successful for life both on and off the water.

  • Competitive Program: The Resilient Rowing Competitive Team will be limited to the Top 32 Rowers (16 boys & 16 girls) and the Top 6 Coxswains. All athletes will be selected by at least two coaches based on: 2K score, power to weight ratio, 10 stroke & 1 minute watt test, overall fitness, technical aptitude, and boat-moving ability. Members of this team will train in both sweep and sculling boats to race at the US Rowing Club National Championship and the annual Royal Canadian Henley. More information.
  • Development Program:The Resilient Rowing Developmental Program will focus on increasing technical proficiency of fundamental rowing technique through teaching rowers to row their weaker side and learning how to scull. This program will also focus on developing increased boat feel through rowing in small boats. More information.

Developmental Program Levels:

  • Beginner Developmental – a four-week program designed for athletes with a limited amount of experience who want to work on their basic rowing skills
  • Advanced Developmental - a six-week program designed for athletes that are more experienced and want to work on refining intermediate rowing skills. Advanced Developmental registration is also available on a per week basis.

Thompson Boat Center
TBC rows out of the Thompson Boathouse in Washington, DC and offers classes in sculling, which will improve the rowing technique. More information.

Sandy Run Scullers
Sandy Run Scullers provides training and recreational sculling opportunities. Their program is geared towards those with little or no sculling experience but with at least one year of sweep rowing experience, and includes the elements of the technical sculling stroke, equipment care, and plenty of time on the water.

Summer programs for youth and adults begin in late June. Participants must be high school age (rising 9th–12th grade) or older. Class size is limited. The youth sculling course is not a competitive sculling program. It is intended for sweep rower students who want to learn how to scull, or who wish to hone/refine their sculling skills. All camps are held at Sandy Run Regional Park. More information.

Penn AC Gold
Penn AC Gold is a competitive and intensive summer rowing program for high school athletes that operates out of Penn AC Boat Club in Philadelphia, PA. Their goal is to instruct athletes on all aspects of rowing necessary to prepare for collegiate and national level competition. More information

Langley Fall Learn To Row Program

Registration for Fall 2023 Learn to Row will open August 18, 2023

Fall 2023 Learn to Row begins September 9, 2023

Rowing offers a total body, low impact workout unequaled by any other sport. Unlike most activities, rowing incorporates the use of your legs, core and upper body. Rowers face backward in the boat and combine the power of leverage and precise timing to propel the boat through the water.

Langley Crew offers an introduction to the sport of rowing for individuals in the Langley pyramid in grades 8 and up. The fall session   includes 8 classes on Saturdays starting in September through the end of October at the Sandy Run Regional Park. This class introduces the basics of rowing – such as language and handling equipment, to performing rowing drills and rowing all eight. Cost is $150.

No previous experience is needed.  This is a great opportunity to get familiar with the sport and prepare yourself to be a part of the Langley Crew Team.
