Langley Crew - SafeSport

SafeSport

USRowing has adopted the SafeSport program to prevent abuse of minor athletes. As a member of USRowing, the adults involved in Langley Crew, including crew team parents and coaches, must comply with the SafeSport program.

The SafeSport program has two levels of protection:

  • Level 1: Access to, and awareness of, the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP)
  • Level 2:
    • Be aware of the policies of MAAPP
    • Complete online SafeSport training and
    • Undergo a background check

Who needs Level 1 training?

All adult volunteers must have access to, and be aware of the contents of, MAAPP (Level 1). This includes all volunteers whose contact with the student athletes is incidental and observable, you do not need to take the training or do the background checks. You can find and download the MAAPP document on this website page.

Who needs Level 2 training?

  • All coaches
  • All Board members
  • All parent volunteers who have “regular contact” with the team members

What Counts as Regular Contact?

According to US Rowing, "Regular Contact Is defined as ongoing interaction where an Adult Participant is in a role of direct and active engagement with any amateur athlete who is a minor. USRowing defines ongoing interactions as five (5) or more instances of In-Program Contact during a 12-month period. For purposes of this definition, a competition is considered a single instance of In-Program Contact regardless of duration."

"In-Program Contact" is defined as "direct and active engagement (including communications, interactions, or activities) between an Adult Participant and any Minor Athlete(s) related to participation in sport. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Competition
  • Practices
  • Camps/clinics
  • Training/instructional sessions
  • Pre/post game meals or outings
  • Team travel
  • Review of game film
  • Team- or sport-related relationship-building activities
  • Celebrations
  • Award ceremonies
  • Banquets
  • Team- or sport-related fundraising or community service
  • Sport education
  • Competition site visits

It is pretty easy to have 5 or more in-program interactions:

  1. Chaperoning the bus one time
  2. Attending the Season Kickoff Meeting
  3. Attending the Regatta Kickoff Meeting
  4. Attending the End of Year Banquet
  5. Driving for Tag Day
  6. Attending Ergathon
  7. Helping out at one of the team dinners

What Do I Have to Do?

  • Review the MAAPP
  • Determine if you are going to have five or more instances of regular contact with the athletes. Since we require at least 4 volunteer activities per family, this will apply to most families
  • Take the online SafeSport training if you are going to have “regular contact” with a child not your own. It’s like a corporate safety and security training, and should take on average about 2 hours
  • Get a background check if you are going to have “regular contact” with a child not your own.
